Country of origin: USA
Smudging is a ceremony used to clear away negative energies and to attract ones that are more positive. Native Americans have traditionally used many herbs for this purpose, each one having a different effect on the aura and inner being. You may burn a smudge stick directly from the end (extinguish carefully afterwards), or break off fragments to burn in a container such as a shell. When smudging, try to feel connected with a power greater than yourself. You may say prayers while using a feather, or simply the palm of your hand, to brush the smoke over you.
Smudge sticks can be used for cleansing of the aura, for example before meditation or prayer, or they quite often these days used by body workers and therapists. They can also be used for cleansing a house or dwelling and are often used in this way in Feng Shui.
Californian white sage (8) - Cleansing, purifying
The home of Californian white sage (Salvia Alpine), a scrub plant with spiky flowers, is along the sun-washed coastline of Southern California.
Sage is a cleansing and purifying herb and can be used to help break up feelings of negativity. Traditionally, it's regarded as being able to open people up and bring about the ability to have a greater connection with the sacred world.
Its properties make it ideal for use in cleansing and clearing ceremonies of people, places and objects, as well as for meditation or prayer. People wanting to build a closer spiritual connection may also benefit from burning or carrying the herb.
Native Scents (27) -
Native Scents is a company centred in New Mexico, USA and is made up of a network of Native American wildcrafters from Canada to South America who collect plants in an ecological and respectful way. Wildcrafting is a term which means that the herbs and plants are collected in such a way that the source is sustainable. For example this means not pulling up root systems, harvesting just enough so that the plant will continue to thrive and generally caring for each plant source. Because of the scarcity of some of the traditional Native American herbs and plants we feel this attitude to be absolutely essential as some companies are actually damaging the environment because they are putting profit first.
We consistently find their herbs and smudge sticks to be of the highest and most exquisite quality.

By Emma, Wrexham View ProfileAlthough ‘baby’, I was surprised how much use I have got from just one of these small sticks: I have smudged my house 7 times, and my aura and my partners and our animals aura’s numerous times (10+), plus cleansed my crystals and there’s still some left to burn - but I’m all smudged out for now! Due to their smaller size, these baby sticks are a good size for carrying in my mobile work box where space is limited.
The sage burnt well and most of the time stayed alight well too. I find it a mentally stimulating and uplifting scent and noticed it felt like it was cleaning my insides as well! The sweet, pungent smell lingers in the air for quite a while after burning, elevating my mood and leaving the atmosphere of the house lighter.
As well as using sage to cleanse houses, I use it to smudge the aura, before Reiki and other attunements. It is useful for purification purposes and the expansive effect it has on the aura. If I, or another, am feeling emotional or going through a tough growth period, using sage to clear the aura may help to keep cutting through and breaking up any heaviness, clearing away that ‘baggaged’ feeling, so that we do not become stuck. I also occasionally cleanse my crystals with sage. I particularly liked the size of these baby sticks, as they felt comfortable to hold.
