Smudging is a ceremony used to clear away negative energies and to attract ones that are more positive. Native Americans have traditionally used many herbs for this purpose, each one having a different effect on the aura and inner being. You may burn a smudge stick directly from the end (extinguish carefully afterwards), or break off fragments to burn in a container such as a shell. When smudging, try to feel connected with a power greater than yourself. You may say prayers while using a feather, or simply the palm of your hand, to brush the smoke over you.

Smudge sticks can be used for cleansing of the aura, for example before meditation or prayer, or they quite often these days used by body workers and therapists. They can also be used for cleansing a house or dwelling and are often used in this way in Feng Shui.

Cedar (10) - Cleansing on emotional level
In Native American tradition the smoke of cedar is used to carry prayers to the creator. It is used to bridge the gap between heaven and earth. It also seems that the cedar tree has connections with power and the sun through many varying traditions such as Sumerian legend, Cabalistic lore and Eqyptian mythology. It is often associated with breaking the misuse of power or powerful forces that may be having a negative influence. This does connect further with Native American tradition where the burning of Cedar is used to help banish nightmares and also to release heavy emotional energies such as depression.

Native Scents (27) -
Native Scents is a company centred in New Mexico, USA and is made up of a network of Native American wildcrafters from Canada to South America who collect plants in an ecological and respectful way. Wildcrafting is a term which means that the herbs and plants are collected in such a way that the source is sustainable. For example this means not pulling up root systems, harvesting just enough so that the plant will continue to thrive and generally caring for each plant source. Because of the scarcity of some of the traditional Native American herbs and plants we feel this attitude to be absolutely essential as some companies are actually damaging the environment because they are putting profit first.

We consistently find their herbs and smudge sticks to be of the highest and most exquisite quality.

Buying the large sized smudge sticks was rather a whimsical purchase for me; I did not have a solid belief that I would actually feel their cleansing effect. The herbal aroma of the lavender and sage stick is quite pungent and I found it pleasing, although I didn't find that the scent lingered. After smudging both my aura and house with this stick I felt that my home was lighter afterwards. I was not sure if it was my imagination, though my partner and I both slept very well that night!

The following week I was feeling very negative. I smudged my aura using the cedar stick, which is another intense fragrance that has a fresh pine twist to it. It worked very well, I felt considerably uplifted and now use the cedar whenever I feel energetically heavy. First time users will discover that the smudge sticks don't smoke as easily as incense and often need relighting. It is a good idea to have a little water nearby to stop them smouldering as once they do get going they are difficult to stop, when you've finished smudging a house. The sticks are lasting longer than the couple of uses that I expected, so far I've smudged three small houses and a large one for family and friends, and anticipate another three or four uses, so I have found them to be good value for money.
