They Say: The Medicine Wheel is the sacred hoop of life's lesson that all must follow. Life begins in the south shield on the sacred hoop path and each of us will travel the circle until death. From death our spirit passes to physical life on the blue spirit trail. On the medicine walk, the west shield teaches us the answers with the void. The darkness is fertile for new beginnings. The future lies in this shield.

More About the Symbol of the Bear
The bear hibernates and goes within. Bear energy is the energy that seeks your deepest truths. And with the finding of your truth comes the honey of life - the sweetness that comes with knowing who you truly are. Bear energy helps you to go within and touch the great void where creation and you come from. By entering silence we give ourselves the opportunity to return to the world stronger and wiser. Bear energy is also about taking the courage that to stop thinking is not to die because we are so much more than our thoughts. So take a break, go within yourself and introspect. From the true place of bear we can see that life is like a dream to us and that our deeper self is not so tied with earthly concerns.
To have with you the symbol of bear is to state your intention to travel within and connect with the places where intuition and "knowing without thinking" are the rulers. Some activities that can help support this connection are meditation, dreaming, long walks by yourself and switching off the television.
More About the Medicine Wheel Symbol
The medicine wheel is an all encompassing system of life common to most Native American traditions. It has four directions: the East, South, West and the North. Here is one simple interpretation of what each direction represents:
- East: yellow / mental / air / birth / eagle
- South: white / emotional / water / childhood / coyote
- West: black / physical / earth / adulthood / bear
- North: red / spiritual / fire / elder / buffalo
Whole books have been written about the medicine wheel and what each direction represents and the exact colours and positions of the various elements can vary between tribes and teachers but this does not matter too much (as long as you stick with the system you become familiar with) as the basic message is that to live to your highest potential and happiness you must put all four aspects into balance. This is a system (like the Kaballah is a system) that can be studied and applied to daily living. The medicine wheel as a symbol is a symbol of balance and reconciliation with yourself. To wear or have around you this symbol states your intention to live in balance and manifest the joy and peace this balance will bring. The four colours also represent the Asian people / white people / black people / and the native people so in this way the medicine wheel is also a symbol of world peace as well as inner peace.
Staff Review by Brett Almond
Out of the packet this incense stick is beautifully fragrant and sweet. It is the first one in this series that I have had to keep going back to smell again as I liked it so much. Once the incense stick is burning a deeper character emerges with a hint of patchouli, a sweet sharpness combined with earthiness, but mostly a relaxing and mild scent. There is a subtle burnt backdrop while remaining very smooth with a beautiful essence.
As with all incense from Sage Spirit the aromas and fragrances have been picked to best represent the spirit of the West in the Native American medicine wheel. This is represented by the bear which is associated with going with in, dreaming, depth and introspection. If you connect with the bear energy often you go deep to try to find answers to your questions. Not in a mental way, more a way of going back to a much deeper part of yourself where you can find the answers you seek.
As with all this range the smoke is very mild. If you like a big bonfire kind of incense in which you can see the smoke all around you then this is not it. This is wispy, and sometimes you cannot see any smoke at all.
