Origin & History
Ginger is a perennial herb that is native to tropical Asia and is extensively cultivated within China, India, Japan, Guatemala, Jamaica and Nigeria. It is a highly esteemed spice that has been utilized for many years within these courtries for its medicinal properties as well as a condiment. The ancients Greeks considered it to be an antidote to poison due to it warming the stomach, similarly within Gingi in India it is drunk to relive stomach upsets. Although it has been used within China and India for its medicinal properties for thousands of years, it was only introduced into Europe between the 10th and 15th centuries - although there is some debate over this whilst others state it came via the Spice route in the middle ages.
It is now widely used within pharmacies for medicinal purposes, as a spice within the food and beverage industry and is a popular ingredient as a seasoning in cooking and pastries within many eastern countries.
Ginger mixes well particularly with other oils derived from citrus fruits, resins and woods. You can try combining it with bay, cajeput, caraway, cardamom, cinnamon, coriander, clove, elemi, eucalyptus and frankincense.
How to Store Your Oils: Essential oils can be quite delicate substances and factors such as strong light, heat, air and moisture can affect them. They are best kept in a cool, dark and dry place ideally in a box and in a cupboard. We wouldn't recommend transferring your essential oils into plastic bottles as the plastic can interact with the chemical makeup of your essential oils and may cause the plastic to deteriorate. Keeping them in their dark, amber bottle with the lid will prolong their life. Oils that are stored in the correct condition should last for years (citrus oils have a slightly shorter life).
Safety Precautions: Make sure the oil is always well-diluted, it may irritate sensitive skin when used in high concentrations. Do not use when there is excessive heat or inflammation.
Do not use undiluted on the skin. Do not take internally without medical supervision. Keep away from eyes. Keep out of the reach of children. Seek advice during pregnancy.
