A medicine shield is something you wear or have near you to remind you of the medicine or gifts you wish to invite into your life. The shield itself is in the shape of a circle, symbolising that life is a circle and nothing ever really ends, it is just reborn. The feathers symbolise a connection to spirit and the tiny pieces of wood a connection and caring for mother earth. The shield is a symbol of protection and contains 16 segments, each one represents one of the 16 directions. The four main directions are East, South, West and North, symbolising the four fold system of man, mental, emotional, physical and spiritual and how the balancing of these four directions brings inner peace and grace. The segmenting of these four directions have further meanings.

Wear this pendant for protection, spiritual connection in a grounded way and for balance of all that you are.

Medicine Wheel (3) - Wheel of life
The medicine wheel is an all encompassing system of life common to most Native American traditions. It has four directions: the East, South, West and the North. Here is one simple interpretation of what each direction represents:

  • East: yellow / mental / air / birth / eagle
  • South: white / emotional / water / childhood / coyote
  • West: black / physical / earth / adulthood / bear
  • North: red / spiritual / fire / elder / buffalo

Whole books have been written about the medicine wheel and what each direction represents and the exact colours and positions of the various elements can vary between tribes and teachers but this does not matter too much (as long as you stick with the system you become familiar with) as the basic message is that to live to your highest potential and happiness you must put all four aspects into balance. This is a system (like the Kaballah is a system) that can be studied and applied to daily living. The medicine wheel as a symbol is a symbol of balance and reconciliation with yourself. To wear or have around you this symbol states your intention to live in balance and manifest the joy and peace this balance will bring. The four colours also represent the Asian people / white people / black people / and the native people so in this way the medicine wheel is also a symbol of world peace as well as inner peace.

Feathers (12) - Connection to Spirit
Feathers are used consistently throughout Native American crafts and ceremonial tools. Birds fly inbetween the earth and the sky and as such feathers represent this connection between us as humans and Great Spirit. Of course a feather is not essential to contact God or be in tune with Spirit. It is a tool - a reminder. Feathers are like a link. You can hold them while praying, you can use a feather to brush smudge smoke over you for cleansing the aura and can have them in crafts and jewellery about you to remind you that you are always connected to Spirit.

Note: Feathers in crafts on Holisticshop are usually from birds found on the edge of roads.

Turquoise (31) - Balanced, soothing, spiritual
Turquoise is said to be a perfect balance of male and female force and has a restful, soothing energy. Due to its balanced nature, it's a good stone to have around during the development of psychic and spiritual skills as it reminds us to be more aware of our intuition without losing track of earthly reality. As a tool, it can be beneficial for astral travellers or meditators.

Additionally, the peaceful energy can remind us to try and remain calm during emotional unrest and develop friendships rather than enemies.
