In Welsh and Irish mythology the Chalice Well represents a gateway to the spirit world, represented by the design of the Chalice Well cover. The two interlocking circles constitute the symbol known as the Vesica Piscis, a design based on ancient and intuitive symbolism. The two interconnected spheres of this design are divided by a sword (thought to represent Excalibur, King Arthur’s legendary sword, believed to be buried nearby at the Glastonbury Abbey), and surrounded by local foliage revered for its midwinter flowering.

The chalice well is famously located at the foot of Glastonbury Tor in the town of Glastonbury in Somerset, England. The ancient well has been in existence for thousands of years – archaeological research suggests at least 2,000 years – and the water continues to thrive in the well today.
The symbol associated with the chalice well is that of two interlocking circles (also known as Vesica Piscis) – the same symbol that appears on the cover of the chalice well itself. There are a lot of myths and legends associated with the well, which are of huge significance to many people.
The Excalibur, the sword of King Arthur, is believed to be buried in the nearby ruins of Glastonbury Abbey. Along with the interlocking circles on the chalice well lid, a sword is shown bisecting the circles and many people believe this to be related to King Arthur.
According to Christian mythology, the chalice well was the spot where Joseph of Arimathea put a chalice that had drops of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion blood in it. The water in the well is slightly red in colour, so some stories say this represents the rusty iron nails used in the crucifixion.
Wells are also a big element of Irish and Welsh mythology and are believed to be access points to the spirit world. Some people believe that the chalice well cover represents how the inner and outer world overlap.
Whatever your belief about the chalice well, wearing jewellery with this symbol, or having items in your home with the symbol featured on, can help strengthen your mystical or spiritual beliefs and help you feel connected to the symbol.
