About Californian White Sage
The home of Californian white sage (Salvia Alpine), a scrub plant with spiky flowers, is along the sun-washed coastline of Southern California.

Sage is a cleansing and purifying herb and can be used to help break up feelings of negativity. Traditionally, it's regarded as being able to open people up and bring about the ability to have a greater connection with the sacred world.

Its properties make it ideal for use in cleansing and clearing ceremonies of people, places and objects, as well as for meditation or prayer. People wanting to build a closer spiritual connection may also benefit from burning or carrying the herb.

More About Juniper Ridge
Juniper Ridge started as a company at a farmers market at Berkeley, California in 1998. And everything they make comes from the mountains or the deserts of western USA. They are obsessed with natural aromatics and also obsessed with the preservation of the wilderness. All of their aromatics and herbs come from the wild and are always sustainably and responsibly harvested. They donate 10% of their profits to defending western wildernesses.

They never kill the plants they harvest. They instead prune larger shrubs and trees that respond well to pruning. They often revist the same plants as previous years to check up on them. For the sages they always trim the clusters at the green stem, above the woody section. Harvesting this way means two or three new clusters will appear the next year where you harvested one.

Staff Review by Brett Almond

I’ve wanted to sell these Californian white sage incense sticks for some time. I’ll admit the price did put me off a bit to start with. For 20 incense sticks they are not the cheapest incense around. But I have learnt with incense over the years that if you want to have pure and high quality ingredients it can be worth paying that bit extra.

I have to say they are the only 100% natural, pure white sage incense sticks that I have come across. There are other incense sticks on the market that companies may call white sage, but I have yet to see any of this quality and purity. They usually have a “fragrance of white sage” or have other additives.

For those that burn Californian white sage smudge sticks this incense will probably not hold any great surprises, as it is just like burning white sage, but in a different format. The benefit of this format is that each stick will give you 25 mins of authentic smoke without having to relight or find your smudge stick is burning too fast.

The incense stick can be used in the normal way as incense or could be used in smudging I feel. If used for smudging indoors you may need to have a dish nearby to catch the ash. When you burn a white sage smudge stick you can blow on it to increase the smoke level if you need it. With the incense stick you cannot do that and the smoke is lighter than a smudge stick. But the gentle stream of smoke brings the same energetics to the party.

Once burning, the fragrance is smokey, natural, pungent, earthy, a little spicy and with the same high energy feel of white sage. This isn’t a fragrant, perfumed, light stick. And many will be buying it for its properties primarily. Sage is a purifying, cleansing energy, used for many centuries as a herb by Native Americans as a reminder of our sacred connection to the world about us.

Some like to burn white sage when giving healing treatments so an incense stick could prove an alternative. I would say probably don’t burn the stick throughout the treatment as some clients may find it too smokey. But you could burn for 2 or 3 minutes at the start and extinguish. That way one stick would last for 8 treatments. For comparison, a packet of these sticks is about one and a half times the price of a white sage smudge stick.

If you are looking for something nice to burn in the lounge before the family gets home, this is not the one you need probably as it hasn’t the perfume or subtlety. If you want a stick to burn to assist in your focus to clear yourself and your environment of negativity or to burn while doing ceremony this could well be the one.

I love white sage myself. Having done many ceremonies where sage is burned as a means of cleansing auras etc. the smell takes me back to that space and can jolt me back to a more spiritual space when I am getting caught up in stress and just forgetting what is important in life.

A kind of specialist incense I would say that many lovers of white sage will feel a great calling towards.

Beautiful aroma of pure, natural sage

Posted by Michael H on 15th Nov 2019

Wow, what a beautiful fragrance these sticks have. I have been using some of the cheaper, Stamford incenses up to now. As much as I like them, some of them can be very smokey. I wanted a natural, pleasant smelling incense, with no harmful substances, and little smoke. I believe I have found that with this Juniper Ridge sage incense. Very little smoke, ideal if you have no proper ventilation available, or if it's too cold to have a window open. The fragrance is subtle, but not so that you'd have to think about it to detect it. Yet not over-powering. I have the desert sage smudge stick bundle that Holistic Shop sell, and this incense smells just like that. It's a clean, slightly sweet, dry grass type of fragrance. The packaging differed somewhat from that shown on this site. Rather than the sticks being packaged in a tube, they come in a flat sleeve, made from a recyclable card (good to see!) However, it is the genuine product. Extremely pleasant, and well worth the additional cost. I will certainly be getting more of this. Native American incenses are fast becoming my favourite.

    Aroma is gorgeous

These sticks are truly beautiful and well worth the price. The aroma is gorgeous; I used them during yoga and meditation and they really enhanced my practice. I was quite knocked out by them, actually. I will also use them for cleansing. I originally bought these because I was intrigued by the review however I can honestly say that I will be ordering them again. Excellent and unique. Cheers guys! Namaste x

    Truly beautiful

Posted by Francine, Gloucestershire on 8th May 2013

These incense sticks are truly beautiful. Yes, they are priced on the higher end, but when I opened the box and sniffed, it was like smelling a garden of sage. I have just burned my first stick for the purpose of clearing; I usually smudge, but white sage bundles are too expensive. I lived in Northern Canada and the USA in the 70's and these sage sticks remind me of the scent of grasses and sage that were burned by the Native Americans living on the nearby reservation, I hope you try them, I don't think you'll be disappointed! Thank you Holistic for making this superior product available to us. (If the price comes down that will be a bonus!!!)

    Worth a try

Posted by Francine on 30th Apr 2013

These are an amazing find! Yes ok, a bit on the pricey side but used sensibly and in place of a smudge stick, (also pricey) they are worth a try. I have just received my order of two packs and posted the link to Holistic on my Facebook wall with a recommendation for these sticks. Enjoy!!Blessings x
