Description of Aroma: Pleasantly warm, crisp and fresh. Initially a softer floral woody note, evolving into a sharper, spicier peppery scent.

Ruling Planet: Mars

Properties Beneficial To The Mind, Emotions And Spirit: Black pepper is said to 'warm the heart where there is indifference.' This stimulating oil has a strengthening effect on the mind and nerves, and may help give stamina when suffering from frustration. According to aromatherapist and author Jeanne Rose, testing indicates black pepper may be helpful to people trying to stop smoking.

Of Interest: This ancient and highly revered spice, mentioned in Chinese and Sanskrit texts, dates back thousands of years. It was used in India over 4000 years ago for diseases such as cholera, and was employed as currency in the middle ages. Atilla the Hun is reputed to have demanded 3000 pounds of pepper as part of the ransom for Rome - where it was a great favourite and taxes were paid with it instead of coins. The Greeks employed it for combating fevers, and the Turks even levied a tax on caravans transporting pepper through their country.

Properties Beneficial To The Physical Body: The powerful warming properties of black pepper make it extremely beneficial to all kinds of aches, pains, muscle and joint stiffness and even temporary paralysis, as it stimulates the circulation and dilates the blood vessels. It is an excellent pre-exercise oil, can bring down a high temperature and is very effective in all kinds of respiratory and digestive disorders.

Black Pepper Oil Blending Suggestions: Black pepper can give an intriguing 'lift' to your blends, try it with basil, bergamot, cypress, frankincense, geranium, grapefruit, lemon, palmarosa, rosemary, sandalwood and ylang ylang.

Alternative Suggestions For Use: It is believed to be an antidote for mushroom and fish poisoning!

Safety Precautions: May cause skin irritation on a sensitive skin. Too much too often may over-stimulate the kidneys.

    A warming oil

Posted by Emma, Wrexham on 13th Jul 2011

This Black pepper essential oil smells just like the smell of the black pepper spice. It is a warming oil which I freqently use in blends for joint and muscular blends, such as with rosemary and eucalyptus. It is also very nice combined in a blend with lavender and grapefruit. I haven't found much information for physical uses of black pepper, but another is as an appetite stimulant. There are however quite a few uses for mental states such as dementia, confusion, depression, forgetfulness and amnesia and for intellectual fatigue, working as a stimulant and pick-me-up. Valerie Worwood mentions in the Fragrant Mind that it may help with emotional blockages, compulsions, disorientation, irritability, anger, frustratino, emotional coldness, apathy and for using where someone needs comfort, stamina, endurance and motivating. A warming oil which can spice up a blend, giving it a bit of zing!
