This handmade leather pouch is a lovely deep purple colour, very soft to the touch and with an excellent finish to it. Made with deerskin, this is a traditional leather used for pouches such as these, medicine bags and other Native American crafts.
The front of the pouch simply lifts up as a flap and there are tassels that hang down from the bottom of the pouch, these are black on one side and purple on the other. The beaded feather embellishment on the front is made up of black, white and light purple beads. These are sewn separately from the pouch into the feather design and backed onto material which is then attached to the pouch. The strap is made from the same leather as the bag, braided together in strips these are then attached and tied to the sides of the pouch.
You will receive a certificate of authenticity with your pouch, and there is also a paper strip wrapped around the leather strap with the artists signature. This is handmade by Sylvia Jackson and other members of the Navajo Nation (Din'eh), USA. This is a group of Navajo women, helped by their children to make deerskin medicine bags, bone and bead necklaces and feather fans.
As these are handmade, no two pouches will be exactly identical - all the more unique to you! The sizing/shape may vary slightly from the picture and the colour can also be slightly lighter or darker depending on the batch we receive at the time however these are all of good quality.
These are of a dark purple colour, you may find the colour may vary very slightly from the colour on your screen due to monitor colour restrictions.
Size of Bag: The height of the actual pouch (i.e. The part you put your items into) is roughly 13cm and the width roughly 13.5 cm (although this will vary slightly). The leather strap from the bag is approximately 96cm in total length. The tassels that hang down from the bottom of the bag are roughly 18-19 cm long and the beaded feather is 15 cm in total length.
Dictionary Terms Explained
- Connection to Spirit
Feathers are used consistently throughout Native American crafts and ceremonial tools. Birds fly inbetween the earth and the sky and as such feathers represent this connection between us as humans and Great Spirit. Of course a feather is not essential to contact God or be in tune with Spirit. It is a tool - a reminder. Feathers are like a link. You can hold them while praying, you can use a feather to brush smudge smoke over you for cleansing the aura and can have them in crafts and jewellery about you to remind you that you are always connected to Spirit.
Note: Feathers in crafts on Holisticshop are usually from birds found on the edge of roads.
- Gentleness, kindness
Deer energy is very gentle. Deer energy ignores negativity and bad behaviour and cuts right through this to find the true heart of whatever or whoever they are dealing with. For someone who wishes to hold bad thoughts about others this can be hard to deal with as deer energy offers nothing for them to fight with and just like the five of swords in the Tarot they may just put their sword down and stop fighting leaving themselves open to love and compassion.
The Buddha is often depicted with a deer and in many legends knights (such as Sir Gawain) follow deer deep into woodland to find new adventures and new heart. Deer brings a healing gift because it is so gentle and only sees through the eyes of love. This is a powerful thing as it can cause others to respond back in kind. Thus healing them.
Sylvia Jackson - Navajo tribe
Sylvia Jackson is a member of the Navajo tribe and lives in the USA. We trade directly with this artist making sure she receives a fair price for her work. All items will be good quality but because of the hand made nature of the goods it is possible that crafts such as these may have small differences between them. These small differences (if there are any) should be seen as a testimony to the fact that you are buying authentic Native American crafts.
