When I first received ‘Seasons of the Witch Oracle’, Samhain had just passed and I was yearning for a deck to enjoy on the long nights, wrapped in a knitted blanket with a warm drink. The deck itself is enchanting. It immediately drew me in and encapsulated all my favourite things about the Autumn and Winter months. The Samhain festival marks the transition from Autumn to Winter. Traditionally, this is a time to get cosy and retreat into darkness, however, the Seasons of the Witch Oracle helped me to navigate this time through transformational spreads that welcome the sometimes-numb depths of Winter.
The illustrations are gorgeous and the deck itself is of very high quality. One card in particular stood out to me on first inspection: Rebirth. The card reads ‘There’s death in all that awakens’ which I feel captures the feeling of the deck beautifully. The deck gives a nod to some of the more traditional aspects of Halloween, with cards such as ‘potions and spells’, ‘cauldron’ and ‘haunted’, whilst also drawing out the more subtle aspects of Samhain such as ‘intuition’, ‘greet the darkness’ and ‘journey’.
Although this deck is clearly seasonal, I like it for the fact that upon opening it, I can be transported back to the turning of Autumn to Winter and the magic that this time of the year holds. The writers, Juliet Diaz and Lorriane Anderson, say that they do intend to write a deck for every sabbat, so I look forward to seeing more from them in the future. I would highly recommend this deck.
