    Dictionary Terms Explained

Dream catcher - Catches the good dreams, lets the bad dreams perish
Dream catchers are intended to aid and protect those sleeping below by filtering their dreams. Symbolically the dream catcher allows good dreams to pass through the web and drift down to the sleeper, while bad dreams are said to become hopelessly entangled in the web, where they perish at the first light of dawn. By hanging a dream catcher above your bed, you signal to a deeper part of yourself that you want to remember those dreams that are of use to you. The dream world is a doorway to the subconscious - the inner workings of your life that you are not always aware of. By listening to your dreams you can learn more about yourself. The feathers symbolise air or the breath of life.

When you hang a dream catcher above your bed or around your home or wear a dream catcher as a piece of jewellery you are signalling to a deeper part of yourself that you wish to be more aware of your dreams and aspirations. You wish to 'catch' your dreams and bring them to ground so that they may become a reality. As is also the symbolism of the dream catcher you wish for it to entrap those dreams that are negative and entrap them so they do not manifest. So wear a dream catcher when you wish to bring your good dreams to life and for the bad ones to perish.

    White - Purity, peace, cleanliness
White is a colour most often associated with purity, cleanliness, innocence and peace.

In meditation and healing sessions its common for people to visualise a pure, white light surrounding them, with the white light washing away impurities and bringing a new sense of life, calmness and vitality. In healing, its also often used as a colour for protection, for cleansing emotional shock and bringing comfort and peace.

Wearing the colour white, or crystals which are white, such as opal, clear crystal quartz, white moonstone, opalite or white topaz, can reinforce your desire for purity, calmness and cleansing. Many people also choose to use white in interior decoration for similar reasons.

In the Western World, a brides gown is traditionally made of white material, said to represent chastity and virginity. This custom of wearing white is believed to have originated from Ancient Greece, where the temples were made of white marble and dedicated to the goddess Athena.

White is also the colour of the moon and of doves, and has a strong association with peace. At the other end of the spectrum it can mean surrender too, as a white flag is flown during conflict or war to show a person or side has surrendered.

In some cultures, white animals are considered sacred, like the white buffalo in Native American cultures. For Asian cultures, white is the sign of mourning they wear white to funerals, instead of black.
