About Clary Sage Essential Oil: Distinctive and inimitable, be prepared for the unexpected! A psychological oil of many facets, clary sage is regenerative, revitalizing and stimulating, yet balancing, inspiring, and said to bring long-lasting inner tranquility. Truly a scentsual experience to be savoured.

Description of Aroma: Intoxicatingly multi-layered, clary sage has a slightly musky yet bright and earthy fragrance, with sweet, nutty and floral notes. An herbaceous scent, a little like fresh warm hay, some say it somewhat resembles the Greek wine, Retsina. (Clary sage is only slightly reminiscent of, and much more pleasant than common sage.)

Ruling Planet: Moon or Mercury

Properties Beneficial To The Mind, Emotions And Spirit: Clary sage is said to feed the soul, give courage, and open paths to the unknown, unusual, creative and intuitive. The main effects of this oil are psychological, and it is highly valued in aromatherapy. An extremely sensual oil, it is one of the most powerful relaxants known, and is revered by some for its aphrodisiac effects. It may possibly help with frigidity or impotence, or aid couples going through a bad patch in their relationship by reducing tension. Apparently the effects are more like that of cannabis than alcohol.

It is said to have an appeasing effect on the astral body - bringing it back under control of the vital centres - and is therefore recommended for people possessing strong psychic abilities, such as mediums and healers, to prevent them depleting their own energy and losing control. Used extensively with nervous problems, it can regenerate energy, balance extreme emotions and inspire the mind and spirit, particularly encouraging feelings of well-being and the ability to put things in perspective.

Clary sage may help reduce deep-seated tension, nervousness, stress - particularly when caused by external factors - fear, paranoia, depression, mid-life crisis, and it can help bring about long-lasting inner tranquility. Thanks to its warmth and liveliness it helps remedy melancholy or feelings of sadness. It might also induce colourful dreams. Its euphoric and uplifting qualities may support people withdrawing from drug addictions, by aiding during moments of panic and helplessness. (Doctors have employed it with people who have threatened and attempted suicide.)

As Susanne Fischer-Rizzi (Complete Aromatherapy Handbook) eloquently describes the effects of clary sage: 'Diverts negative thoughts, and helps guide our energies so we may revel in our own dance of life'.

Of Interest: Also known as just clary, this delectable oil was highly esteemed during the Middle Ages, when it was referred to as oculus Christi, or Eye of Christ, and also clear eye, due to its properties for healing eye disorders. Long considered to have immense healing powers, from antiquity it has had the reputation as a panacea, or universal remedy.

The name comes from the Greek skliros, or hard, referring to the petal points, and also the Latin clarus, or clear, as the herb was used for clearing the eyes of mucus. In centuries past the plant was used to increase the euphoric effects of wine and beer - sometimes resulting in disastrous hangovers! With the aid of this plant a German winemaker created Clary wine almost magically from previously inferior wines, and let them pass as Muscatel wine, as the taste is similar. Introduced to England in 1562, it was sometimes used to substitute hops when brewing beer. When tuberculosis was widespread, clary sage was used to strengthen the immune system of patients, as well as helping to combat the unpleasant symptoms.

Clary sage belongs to the same family as many other herbs used commonly in aromatherapy for culinary purposes - an indication for their affinity with the digestive system. It is now widely used as a fixative in cosmetics and perfumes. Clary sage has similar therapeutic properties to common sage, but is preferable for long-term treatment as it contains far lower levels of thugone, and therefore does not present the risks of toxicity associated with the high levels contained in common sage.

Properties Beneficial To The Physical Body: Too numerous to mention all of them, but they include its remarkable cell regenerating properties which make this oil useful for rejuvinating skin and hair treatments, as well as strengthening the immune system. Particularly valuable are its hormone balancing properties, as it slightly promotes the action of the female hormone estrogen, popularizing its use with women's concerrns such as menstrual problems, including pre-menstrual syndrome, menopause, pregnancy and birth preparation. Other uses include respiratory disorders, hair loss, wounds, ulcers, stomach and digestive concerns, and fevers.

Clary Sage Blending Suggestions: Clary sage blends beautifully with numerous oils, including jasmine, sandalwood, geranium, vetiver and tuberose, which makes it most intriguing. Also experiment with cypress, lavender, orange, bergamot, cedarwood, citronella, frankincense, grapefruit, juniper and lime.

Alternative Suggestions For Use: Clary sage is ideal for creating the perfect atmosphere for a relaxing massage or bath - especially for two. Add it to your shower gel and bath oil, and of course your room diffuser. In Jamaica a concoction of the leaves boiled in coconut oil was used to cure scorpion bites.

Essential Safety Precautions: Do not combine this oil with any medications containing iron. Its sedative effect may reduce concentration, so don't drive or operate dangerous machinery after use. If combined with alcohol, nausea or nightmares may result. Extremely large doses may produce headaches and even poisoning. Clary sage can create experiences of euphoria and may intoxicate some people, although to use it expressly for this purpose would be considered misuse in aromatherapy.
