Native Americans regard hummingbirds as sacred and bringers of joy, life and love. When depicted in pairs, the meaning is further enhanced, symbolising devotion, the continuing cycle of life and eternity. A feather from the hummingbird is particularly treasured, as it's said to open the heart.

In Native American communities, where the art of storytelling is held in high regard, tales of encounters with hummingbirds are plentiful. Most tales abound with myths and lessons, aimed at helping people learn. In the case of the hummingbird, they encourage people to open up to others, share in the beauty of life, see joy in everything and everyone, and most of all, to learn to love.
