On back of card: The Megalithic Passage Tomb at Newgrange was built around 3200BC. The kidney shaped mouond covers and area of over one acre and is surrounded by 97 kerbstones. Many of these are richly decorated with triple spirals or triskele. At dawn on the winter solstice and for a few mornings either side of the winter solistice the long inner passageway and chamber of Newgrange are illuminated for 17 minutes by the winter solstice sunrise (shortest day of the year). A shaft of sunlight shines through the roof box over the entrance and penetrates the passage to light up the chamber.
