He developed the term 'shamanics' in the early 90s to describe his way of adapting ancient wisdom to fit modern times. In his words, it is, 'Shamanism renewed a Science of the Spirit for a new millennium.' The book comprehensively covers many topics that are typically associated with shamanism, such as medicine tools, power animals, totems, guides, teachers and guardians, and journeying, and provides a platform from which to go off and explore these in your own time if you so desire. Illustrations are included as well to help show those new to the subject what particular tools, such as a smudge pot or talking stick, actually look like. There are numerous exercises in the book, so you're kept very busy, plus there's the addition of a CD to help you undertake shamanic journeys.
There are two tracks of drumming to listen to - one to use for your first attempts, then a longer piece catering for the more experienced -and there are detailed instructions in the book explaining everything you need to know. I was initially a bit perturbed that the CD didn't contain spoken prompts (how could I possibly remember what to do?), but actually this isn't a problem at all as the general aim at first is to set your intention and then enjoy the experience. As a complete beginner, it took me several attempts to get anywhere, but despite my hesitation the drumming proved pleasant to listen to and did eventually create the desired effect.
