Peppermint Organic Pure Essential Oil (10ml) - Mentha Piperita

Peppermint is a uniquely refreshing oil with a bright menthol aroma, its sharp but familiar scent has a piercingly strong mint and grassy fragrance.

An essential in any first aid kit, peppermint is great for invigorating, de-congesting and awakening the body. It can help to physically clear the head and is considered to be helpful for depression, anger, hysteria and nervous trembling. Unusually this oil can warm the senses when you are feeling cold, but also cool you down when you are feeling too hot.

Physically, peppermint is known to be a prime remedy for many digestion issues such as indigestion, heartburn, stomach pains, IBS and nausea. It can aid in respiratory concerns such as colds or the flu and is an excellent remedy for chickenpox.

Peppermint can be used as an emergency treatment for shock and can be inhaled straight from the bottle in this instance. Its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties can cool and constrict the capillaries which can aid in treating skin disorders such as acne, irritated or oily skin.

Within other uses you can try adding peppermint to a diffuser to create a sense of a clear environment. It makes a soothing foot bath and insects and vermin are known to dislike the smell of this oil, simply add a few drops on your pillow to keep the mosquitoes away.

Origin & History
Peppermint grows throughout Europe and is currently largely cultivated in the United States, although its origin is still unknown but it is thought to have been in existence since ancient times. In Greek mythology it is said that the plant is named after a Mentha who was a much loved nymph by Pluto. Pluto's wife Persephone became so jealous of Mentha that she trod her into the ground, and so Pluto changed her into the enchantingly fragrant plant that we know today. The Greeks and Romans used peppermint within wines and sauces as a flavouring, and was highly valued in China and Japan for its digestive properties. Dried peppermint leaves have even been found in Egyptian pyramids that date back to 1000 BC suggesting that it was considered to be valuable at this time. To this day, peppermint is used commercially within confectionery, toiletries and pharmaceuticals. It is the popular fragrance that we are familiar with in chewing gum, toothpaste, liqueurs, ice cream and digestion remedy teas.

Blending Suggestions
Peppermint oil can be quite a dominating aroma so it's best to use sparingly if possible to avoid this. It can add an enlivening scent to your blends so you can try it with eucalyptus, immortel, rock rose, cedarwood, cypress, benzoin, mandarin, marjoram, niaouli, lavender, lemon, balm, lime, verbena, pine, rosemary and grapefruit.

How to Store Your Oils: Essential oils can be quite delicate substances and factors such as strong light, heat, air and moisture can affect them. They are best kept in a cool, dark and dry place ideally in a box and in a cupboard. We wouldn't recommend transferring your essential oils into plastic bottles as the plastic can interact with the chemical makeup of your essential oils and may cause the plastic to deteriorate. Keeping them in their dark, amber bottle with the lid will prolong their life. Oils that are stored in the correct condition should last for years (citrus oils have a slightly shorter life).

Size: 10ml, presented in an amber glass bottle.

Extra Information: Not Tested on Animals, Manufactured in the UK. (For more information on Natural by Nature Oils, please see below).

Safety Precautions: Using the correct dilution for peppermint oil is very important, the main rule is that less is more! When applying to the skin, always used less than 1% dilution to avoid irritation, only use 1 drop for inhaling and no more than 3 drops when adding to a bath (especially for those with sensitive skin).

Peppermint should be avoided for those with hay fever as the oil can irritate the mucous membranes. It can cause wakefulness, so it is best to avoid in the evening (unless this is the desired effect that you wish for). Do not use if you suffer from cardiac disease or high blood pressure. Use with caution during pregnancy or if breast feeding as the oil can inhibit milk flow. If you are using homeopathic medicines, this oil can counteract their effects even if stored close-by.

Do not use undiluted on the skin. Do not take internally without medical supervision. Keep away from eyes. Keep out of the reach of children. Seek advice during pregnancy.
