Size: Two mini smudge sticks - about 3.5 inches per stick (8.5cms)
Country of origin: California, USA
Here we have two mini smudge sticks made from white sage. The end can be lit and will provide plenty of smoke. Once used you can extinguish the smudge stick by pushing it against a bowl or into some sand or earth. Be careful though as it can reignite.
We also sell larger white sage smudge sticks. These probably work out a little bit more cost effective in terms of the amount of white sage in them, but the advantage of the mini ones is they are a very handy size. We love the Juniper Ridge smudge sticks as we know they are collected in such a good way. Even the plastic they come in is biodegradable.
Smudging is a ceremony used to clear away negative energies and to attract ones that are more positive. Native Americans have traditionally used many herbs for this purpose, each one having a different effect on the aura and inner being. You may burn a smudge stick directly from the end (extinguish carefully afterwards), or break off fragments to burn in a container such as a shell. When smudging, try to feel connected with a power greater than yourself. You may say prayers while using a feather, or simply the palm of your hand, to brush the smoke over you.
Smudge sticks can be used for cleansing of the aura, for example before meditation or prayer, or they quite often these days used by body workers and therapists. They can also be used for cleansing a house or dwelling and are often used in this way in Feng Shui.
Dictionary Terms Explained
Californian White Sage
- Cleansing, purifying
The home of Californian white sage (Salvia Alpine), a scrub plant with spiky flowers, is along the sun-washed coastline of Southern California.
Sage is a cleansing and purifying herb and can be used to help break up feelings of negativity. Traditionally, it's regarded as being able to open people up and bring about the ability to have a greater connection with the sacred world.
Its properties make it ideal for use in cleansing and clearing ceremonies of people, places and objects, as well as for meditation or prayer. People wanting to build a closer spiritual connection may also benefit from burning or carrying the herb.
Juniper Ridge started as a company at a farmers market at Berkeley, California in 1998. And everything they make comes from the mountains or the deserts of western USA.
Juniper Ridge are obsessed with natural aromatics and also obsessed with the preservation of the wilderness. All of their aromatics and herbs come from the wild and are always sustainably and responsibly harvested. They donate 10% of their profits to defending western wildernesses.
They never kill the plants they harvest. They instead prune larger shrubs and trees that respond well to pruning. They often revist the same plants as previous years to check up on them.
For the sages they always trim the clusters at the green stem, above the woody section. Harvesting this way means two or three new clusters will appear the next year where you harvested one.
