CD: Feet in the Soil by James Asher

By Vernon Marshall View ProfileThis is a very fine CD. This is not a piece of work to be used as background music. It is an excellent and masterful creation. It needs to be listened to. Asher’s skill in making effective use of the instruments used by aboriginal cultures is most impressive as it has the ability to sound exotic whilst at the same time appealing to the western ear. There are clearly devised rhythms and melodies that are varied and result from the talented application of different instruments that at times dance opposite one another and yet come together as well. There is something tribal and earthy and yet at the same time something deep and sophisticated. This composition is more than just a fine piece of craftsmanship. It is a masterpiece. I have listened to this “anthology” of eleven compositions many times over and have yet to tire of it. It can be used for many purposes and I would heartily recommend it to anyone loving this genre of music but who really needs to feel the tune and understands where it may lead.

By Glynis Queenan 'Feet in the soil' is definately in the right category. I found this cd very uplifting. Speaking as a first-time listener to this genre of music, I'd describe it as Aboriginal/African funk mixed with a few relaxing tracks. Ideal as background music, or turned up loud to really feel the rythm. To really awaken your senses and add to the atmosphere, try burning Tibetan or Nepalese incense when listening.
