What a wonderful book this is! This is one of my favourite books on Yoga practice. I want a book that is easy to use, that is clear and concise, that is not weighed down with theory but which can get me practising straight away. I have practised yoga on and off for many years but I sometimes find myself being too ambitious. I need a book that I can pick up and get down to the doing of it. The book advertises itself as providing material for “any age, any place, any time.”
The book is divided into three sections, a 45-minute, sequence, a 20-minute sequence, and a 10-minute sequence. Each posture or movement is described on two pages, the left side page giving step by step instructions, with line drawings at the bottom of how the stages move from one to the next. On the right hand page is a larger drawing of the posture on a brightly coloured background. What I like is the fact that, where the postures are repeated in the shorter sequences later in the book, the full details are given again. Thus, there is no necessity for flicking back to earlier pages. On the left page also, there is a note about the benefits of that particular posture and a warning in bold where such a posture may not be appropriate for those with high blood pressure or for pregnant women. I also note that no technical language is used. There are no uses of Indian words for the postures and exercises, or “sequences” as they are referred to, with titles such as “Shoulder Stand” or “Big Toe” used instead.
