The Tarot is a specific system that has 78 cards in total. There are 4 suits (referred to as the minor arcana) and 22 other cards (referred to as the major arcana). Each card represents a specific energy. And each card, through the picture on the card, is trying to help you to feel the specific energy of that card. By Len Leaper View ProfileThis offering by Lo Scarabeo is based on an Italian deck produced in 1880 and the original is held in a private collection in Turin. The card titles are in Italian. This does not create difficulties and the cards align easily enough with recognised interpretations.
I am impressed with the art work and especially the line detail which gives an impression of engraving. The images are washed with fine colour which gives a feeling of sobriety and richness at the same time.
The major arcana cards are mostly represented as one would expect and any reader who is used to decks aligned with the Rider Waite will recognise the imagery. I found illustrations of the majors extremely appealing and full of prompts towards intuitive reading. I especially love ‘La Luna’ (the moon) and La Torre (the tower) both of which are very special.
The Court cards are interesting and again finely drawn. These figures carry energy and resonance which is seldom evident in modern decks. The courts carry little of background or scenery but that does not detract from their energy at all. In fact it serves to emphasise the character and messaging.
The minor arcana are not going to be easy to read for anyone who is not used to Tarot. These are ‘pip’ cards and wands, cups, coins and swords are shown as such. The swords carry blades as so also do the wands, however reading is not compromised at all.
Card numbers throughout the deck are placed a little randomly, sometimes in all four corners and sometimes not. This can serve to allow reversals to be read more easily.
