Citronella Definition and Citronella Products

Citronella - Refreshing, vibrant / sharp, powerful, lemony, woody-sweet
Name: Citronella, Cymbopobon nardus

Alluring, surprising, fresh and uplifting, possessing effective, powerful and restorative holistic healing qualities.

Essential information: Don't underestimate this appealing, lemony scented oil as merely a mossie repellent! Its qualities are surprisingly far-reaching; from lifting depression and easing your aches and pains, to reactivating and balancing your whole system and restoring your spirit.

Description of aroma: Fresh, green, citrussy, slightly rosy and lemony, its slightly sweet fragrance is quite powerful and similar to lemongrass.

Ruling planet: None.

Properties beneficial to mind, emotions and spirit: Citronella has a clearing, uplifting and stimulating effect on the mind, which may help you deal with depression and emotional fatigue. Try this oil when recovering from an illness, to help restore your spirit and the equilibrium of your whole body.

Of interest: Many oil-producing plants belong to the same family as citronella, including lemongrass, palmarosa and vetiver, and also wheat, rice, corn, barley and oats. The herb is added to flavour Chinese food.

Citronella came into vogue in the last century, and the first shipment of oil to Europe from Sri Lanka, where it was originally grown, was known as oleum siree. However, in 1890 it was found to be adulterated with kerosene to lower the cost, and Sri Lanka ceased to be the main exporter, being taken over by Java who produced a superior quality.

For quite some time it has been added to candles as an insect repellent - probably its most well-known attribute. Used extensively in the soap and cosmetics industries, it is used to adulterate more expensive oils in order to make them go further. As well as soaps, skin and hair products for oily conditions, citronella is an additive in polishes, detergents and deodorizing products.

Properties beneficial to the physical body: A general tonic for the body, try citronella to ease headaches, migraines and neuralgia. It is also reputedly helpful for aches, pains and rheumatism. It has a balancing effect on the heart and nervous system, and possibly a similar effect on the digestive and reproductive systems, and may therefore be useful if you are convalescing, as its stimulating effects can invigorate and activate the whole system.

Scentsual blending suggestions: Citronella blends well with bergamot, cajeput, eucalyptus and geranium, and also lavender, neroli, peppermint, petitgrain, sage and ylang ylang.

Alternative suggestions for use: As mentioned previously, citronella is used widely for soap making, for deodorizing agents and insecticides - it can help get rid of animal fleas, and repel cats and other small animals, if applied regularly. A couple of drops on a cotton ball will deter moths and insects, and keep your clothes smelling fresh. It is ideal in a sick-room as a deodorizer. Citronella is believed to have skin softening properties when blended with neroli and bergamot oils.

Essential safety precautions: According to Julia Lawless, citronella should be avoided during pregnancy, and it is also contra-indicated for estrogen-dependant cancers. Avoid using on sensitive or damaged skin, including eczema and psoriasis, as it can irritate.

Do not use essential oils undiluted or take internally without the guidance of a qualified practitioner. The information contained here is for general interest and is not intended to replace medical diagnosis or treatment.
