By Louise Green View ProfileThe cover has stars shining in an indigo sky, twinkling above a mountain range; the title in its copper lettering seems to hover in the air against the darkened background. It all looked mysterious and a little dramatic. I wondered if the book would be as colourful inside, instead I found a quietly elegant book, which just goes to show, you can't judge a book by its cover! The pages are of a fine white paper, each page is bordered in pale grey lines, the typeface is clear, the paragraphs well spaced with a heading. The effect was elegant and uncluttered. The author, Kate West, covers a number of topics including Witchcraft and Magic, Rites and Rituals, Moon workings. Chapter five looks at spells and the areas they can be worked in, for example, relationships, career, protection and healing, to name a few. The spells are easy to follow, the instructions clear and precise and the ingredients or items required for them would be easily obtainable, such as coloured thread or white candles. The chapters continue with Sabbat Rituals, Rites of Passage and Initiation, also how to write your own rites and spells. The book closes with the appendices including terms and definitions, also further reading and contact points.
The book has a great deal of information within its covers; it took me a while to read it. I think it fair to say that much of it would be well known to practising witches but the author does give credit for her sources where appropriate. I felt much of the chapters on rituals and rites were centred around covens with advice following on how the solitary might adapt these for their needs.
