They say: A complete book of spells and rituals no modern witch can afford to be without

Being a Witch means an exciting year of spells and rituals, feast days and festivals, blessings and broomsticks.

In the Witches' year there are 8 Sabbats and 12 or 13 Esbats: that means 20 or 21 main events for which Ritual has to be written. At the Sabbats, Witches celebrate the seasons and the cycle of the Goddess and the God. At the Esbats they work Magic for themselves, others who request it and for the land, all of which require spells to be created. There are also acts of Magic that cannot wait for the next formal meeting of the Coven to take place.

Kate West has collected together the most essential spells for every occasion of a full year's working in the Craft. As well as celebrating the Sabbats, Esbats and workings for other times in the lunar cycle, this book will give you hints, tips and advice for getting on as a modern Witch in the real world. Whether you are young in Craft and needing guidance, or an old hand seeking new ideas, Kate West uses her down-to-earth Witchcraft to create the perfect ritual for your needs.

Kate West is the author of The Real Witches' Handbook, The Real Witches' Kitchen and The Real Witches' Coven as well as Spell in Your Pocket. She has been Vice President and Media Co-ordinator of The Pagan Federation and is High Priestess of the Hearth of Hecate.

The cover has stars shining in an indigo sky, twinkling above a mountain range; the title in its copper lettering seems to hover in the air against the darkened background. It all looked mysterious and a little dramatic. I wondered if the book would be as colourful inside, instead I found a quietly elegant book, which just goes to show, you can't judge a book by its cover! The pages are of a fine white paper, each page is bordered in pale grey lines, the typeface is clear, the paragraphs well spaced with a heading. The effect was elegant and uncluttered. The author, Kate West, covers a number of topics including Witchcraft and Magic, Rites and Rituals, Moon workings. Chapter five looks at spells and the areas they can be worked in, for example, relationships, career, protection and healing, to name a few. The spells are easy to follow, the instructions clear and precise and the ingredients or items required for them would be easily obtainable, such as coloured thread or white candles. The chapters continue with Sabbat Rituals, Rites of Passage and Initiation, also how to write your own rites and spells. The book closes with the appendices including terms and definitions, also further reading and contact points.

The book has a great deal of information within its covers; it took me a while to read it. I think it fair to say that much of it would be well known to practising witches but the author does give credit for her sources where appropriate. I felt much of the chapters on rituals and rites were centred around covens with advice following on how the solitary might adapt these for their needs. It made me realise that being a part of......more
