They say: Here is a directory of essential oils. All those in popular use and many unusual one are included. Each oil is extensively categorised, containing entries such as a description of the aroma, history, mind, body, precaution, chemical constituents, properties, effect on skin, blends etc.
Budding sales of essential oils delight the traders but can present a potential hazard to the consumer. The tiny bottles, easily bought in a variety of outlets, have become increasingly popular in recent years. Whilst they are safe in the hands of trained therapists, the consumer could be asking for trouble if not forewarned about their various properties.
'The research put into the production of this book is mind-boggling, making it the most comprehensive collection of facts relating to essential oils ever offered with aromatherapists in mind, and contains much information that is not readily available from other sources. By Sophie Elena View ProfileA useful book for qualified aromatherapists and those in training, listing many popular and lesser-known oils, their aroma, features, history/myth, chemical constituents, properties, precautions, effect on mind, body, skin and other oils each blends with. The plant or part thereof (e.g. bark, leaf, shrub, flower), latin name, family, note, extraction method and 'planet' are also listed. This 'planetary' suggestion e.g. sun, venus, mars appears to have no other comment and I would have been interested to know how such classification was arrived at, having not found this in other books I have used.
As a qualified aromatherapist myself, I would urge caution to the unqualified person considering using this book, as though a precautionary note is included for each oil with regards to possible problems in use, this book does not set out to cover the skills and decision-making needed for correctly blending the essential oils with the correct base oil, or the amounts required.
For those already knowledgeable, this book certainly includes many lesser-known oils, and has a useful glossary of conditions and suitable oils. A blending chart is included with regards to those oils the author feels work well together from the same or adjacent section on the chart. There are some interesting supporting quotes from various people, such as Rudolph Steiner, for some oil entries which adds to the interesting read I found this book to be, and one I will refer to and am glad to have on my shelves.
