They say: Traditional Celtic sounds are infused with the deeper resonance of E-bow guitar, fretless bass, keyboards and infectious rhythms. Capturing the sense of ritual and mystery of the ancient celebrations that mark the turning of time, this album has universal appeal. Throughout the recording the arrangements echo images of these mystic rituals, the track Samhain starts with three powerful notes evoking the image of a druid sounding the magical horn. Beltane marks the return of the power of the fire festival, as the Green Man releases the spirit of summer.
Just as the sun on the dawn of the solstice gives light to the shadows. Phil Thornton's music brightens the spirit and empowers the listener with it's magic.

By Cate Gardner View Profile'Solstice' is the first Phil Thornton CD I've heard and I've found it wonderfully uplifting just to listen to and an exceptional aid to meditation, path working and as a background to ritual.
In the first track 'Summer Solstice' an engaging percussive beat mixed with instruments old and new, portray the very height of summer, felt with a rising crescendo of sound and excitement which dies away to the sound almost of a heart beat. 'Embrace of the Sun God' is a sound to accompany the feeling of the sun through closed eyelids the red glow and the power of it, yet also the languid feeling of not wanting to move a muscle in the Sun God's embrace. 'Voice at the end of the Rainbow' encompasses a summer storm, rainfall, thunderclaps and especially energy, whilst 'Samhain' is a complete contrast, the almost morose sound of a horn in the darkness - this one has to be my favourite. 'Winter Solstice' is the tinkling sound of ice crystals falling, entwined with the pops and sparks of the Yule log. Yet in the darkness there is the expectancy of re-birth.
'While the Green Man sleeps' promotes a feeling of quietude in the forest, anticipation and waiting with bated breath for the awakening. 'Awakening' evolves slowly from the sound of pure bird song through the gentle strumming of a guitar accompanied by the notes of a cuckoo. The rhythm becomes the dominant feature moving faster, the repetitive phrasing reaches a climax of birdsong and the musical 'awakening' is reached. 'Beltane' or May Day is the only track that didn't immediately gel with me. I felt the music was too synthetic for this ancient ritual. Who knows perhaps it will become a favourite in the future – but on an 8 track......more
