They say: 'Rhythmsticks' is an annual event on Londons Southbank. For about ten days each year, musicians from all over the world display their percussive skills in an international celebration of drumming. It was here, a few years ago, that James Asher first heard the amazing Sivamani. Surrounded by a multitude of novelty sounds such as birdcalls, springdrums, etc., this supreme musician electrified his audience with virtuoso skill, profound joy and playful humour. 'We were transfixed. Time stood still. It was a moment of sheer magic' - James recalls.

So when a few years later, James met Sivamani by pure chance through his great percussionist friend Sandeep Raval - the guide and mentor for James' first Indian album project, Tigers of the Raj - he was thrilled when the celebrated musician accepted an invitation to his London studio to listen to this joint album. James was even more thrilled when Sivamani's response to the album was to say - God intended us to meet!'.

Sivanami is one of India's best-known and most colourful percussionists with a sparkle, presence and charisma that is unmatched in the entertainment world. James hopes that listeners will derive as much pleasure from listening to this album as he and Sivanami had making it. This was a collaboration whose fun and warmth transformed it into a great adventure.

This CD consists of nine musical pieces, and also includes a video interview of Asher and Sivamani, explaining how they came to meet and work together on Drums on Fire. Although I found the interview a touch boring the music itself is anything but!! (This is just my personal view, others may enjoy the interview as much as the music.)

My favourite track was Raindance, it makes you want to jump up and do a raindance of your very own along to the music. It's very energetic and infectious, and could stir the most timid ones amongst us to lurch off the chair into a mad, frenzied, arm flailing, weather altering jig. You can almost feel the heat of the Indians bonfire and see them dance along to it!! Not all of the CD comprises of this style of upbeat music, Lakeside is very relaxing and almost 'day dreamy' with low accompanying vocals. 'Drums of Fire' implies only drums are used to create this wonderful collection, also featured are the silver flute, violin, soprano saxophone, guitar, and various drums. These are detailed in the case insert, along with a short write up on the musicians. I've listened to this many times during the time it's taken to write my review, its very thought provoking, yet calming and reflecting. Superb. Five star recommendation!
