'The whales travel down the east coast of Australia in September taking their calves from their warm birthplaces to the rich feeding grounds of Antarctica. From the beaches of Byron Bay and the landmark lighthouse, I can watch them blowing off from their breathing holes and occasionally breaching. One morning I dove into the water and heard the strange callings of the whales as if I were swimming right next to them. I was mesmerised and could have stayed under the water forever - floating, relaxing and listening to the songs the whales were singing. Coming out of the water, I felt elated and rejuvenated.

When Waduda from New Earth Records suggested incorporating whale songs in the music for Reiki, I was reminded of this experience. I immediately saw that the enchanting, soothing and yearning quality of whale 'vocalising' would be perfect to create a relaxing and calming acoustic environment for Reiki. What unfolded was a spontaneous interplay between the calls of the whales and the instruments. Reiki - Gentle spiritual healing therapy
Reiki is a gentle energetic, spiritual healing therapy. “Rei” means “unseen” or “spiritual” and “Ki” means “energy” or “life force”. This is often translated as “Universal Life Energy”. The system was developed by Mikao Usui in Japan in the early 20th century after three weeks of fasting and meditating on Mount Kurama. Energy flows through the hands to the “patient” or recipient in such a way that the givers energy is not depleted. The therapist keys into the universal energy, not necessarily their own individual energy. This universal energy is seen as intelligent and will heal the patient’s energy field without exact diagnosis. Treatment can be used on people, on yourself, pets and distance healing. The system often uses “attunement” where people are attuned so that they may also give this type of healing. Often symbols are used to help key into certain aspects of this healing art.

While Rosie was recording the sound clips to put on the site for this album I came in and asked what this album was like. She said, 'I keep going way past the 30 seconds recording for each clip. I keep getting to two minutes and more without realising it because it is just so relaxing.'

The overriding word to describe this album is soothing, caused by the womb-like, nurturing quality of the whale noises combined with beautiful music. I just know this is going to be popular! It has atmosphere and it is alive. It is great for all healing therapies including Reiki and is just great to chill out to. It is more a musical album with some whale noises rather than a whale noise album with some added music.
