This had me crying in parts, despite being on a crowded train, and tells the story so far of how traditional vet, Donna Kelleher, unexpectedly became a holistic vet, specialising in animal chiropractics, acupuncture, herbs and nutrition, in order to heal her clients and/or give them a better quality of life.
Each chapter tells the story of a particular animal that she has treated. You will become involved with the characters of Donna and her animal clients and their care-givers (owners). Most of the case studies have happy endings, and I found some very moving and emotional. I also found myself questioning whether I am giving the best care I can to the rescue dogs I look after. Donna gives many suggestions for animal care, and shows her own thought processes and questions she has asked of conventional medicine and its role in animal health (e.g. does a domestic animal really need annual vaccinations and who really benefits from these.
There is a wealth of information in this book. If you choose not to read the addition to each chapter, which offers advice as to symptoms and both conventional veterinary care/medication and alternative or complementary use of herbs, acupuncture, chiropractics and homeopathy, then this book is a lively and deep story, however, if you also take on board some of the recipes for home-made nutritional diets to help specific conditions and for general good health in different animals of various ages, then this book doubles as a useful aid for your own domestic pets.
As an holistic therapist, who is gradually working more and more with animals, this book has also made me question whether I want to study acupuncture and increase my current knowledge of herbs and homeopathy, for Donna's......more
