They say: Here is the very first calendrical compilation of the rich and wonderful Celtic natural and supernatural beliefs, a work of over forty years of dedication by the author. In addition to the 12-month calendar are sections on Celtic folklore, superstition, fortune telling, folk medicine, plant, animal and weather lore, the supernatural and phenomena. The Celtic Calendar will enable Celts all over the world to recapture their rich pageantry of the traditions, knowledge and spiritual beliefs.

Brian Day was brought up in a family whose elder members still had a considerable knowledge of folk lore, folk medicine and folk ways generally. From them he acquired an early interest in folk culture, herbalism, music and linguistics and has devoted much of his time since then in researching and recycling invaluable lost cultural material.

The Celtic Calendar is a huge treasure trove of material. Said by the writer to have taken him over forty years of research, this book of 400 pages is a compilation of the supernatural beliefs and folk traditions of the Celtic peoples. There are detailed introductions to Celtic folklore, superstitions, folk medicine, plant lore, animal lore, weather lore and much more. Most of the book is arranged according to the twelve months of the year with traditions and beliefs connected with the different days within each month. This book is something of a masterpiece. The detail is impressive and the clarity of the material is commendable. At £15.99, it may seem expensive, but the compilation is a worthy addition to the many books on Celticism. For those readers who wish to further their interest in the Celtic traditions, this book is a much more colourful alternative to the often dry collections of folk tales. Furthermore, much of the material, I am sure, will not be found elsewhere.

This is a very comprehensive book, suitable for anyone wishing to know about celtic folklore. It goes into a whole host of detail, not just about the months of the year. An excellent addition to my collection, and very good value.
