Mastering the Tarot
Review (last 5 for this product, read more)

By Brian Stevenson View ProfileThis book can either be studied on its own or as a companion to the author's previous book, "Understanding the Tarot". The first thing to strike the reader is that the whole book is beautifully and extensively illustrated in full colour. The illustrations are taken from medieval alchemical prints and several different Tarot decks, including the 15th century Visconti-Sforza, the early-20th century Universal-Waite and the late-20th century Arthurian and Mythic Tarot.
The book opens with a detailed history of Tarot, including details about possible influences such as Alchemy and Mystery Plays. The central chapter is devoted to a detailed study of the Major Arcana. Each Major Arcana card is allocated four pages, which contain four images of the card taken from different decks, plus an example of a possible influence on the card's design. A suggested meditation exercise is also given for each card.
Next, a helpful short tabular chapter covers the number cards of the Minor Arcana. Many Tarot books do not pay much attention to the Court cards. However, in this book the author devotes a whole page to each Court card. The final chapter sets out how to work with the cards and includes sections on Divination, Spreads, Case Studies and Story-Telling Exercises.
Readers who have some basic knowledge of the Tarot will find that this excellent book will deepen and enrich their knowledge.
