Originally the Holisticshop range of essential oils went under the name of Windflowers. This company was founded by a qualified aromatherapist, selling high quality oils to shops and aromatherapists throughout UK and the world. In October 2003 the opportunity came up for Holisticshop to buy Windflowers, which we did. This acquisition has meant Holisticshop customers can now buy high quality oils at the price professional aromatherapists would expect to pay. These are aromatherapist quality oils. Lower quality oils are available on the market but we continue to pick the best quality source for every oil. For example Windflowers lavender oil is "High Alpine" lavender from Mount Ventoux in the Pyrennes and the ylang ylang is the "complete" oil, not the ylang ylang II or III which come from a different stage in the distillation process.

Description of aroma: A fresh, green, floral, slightly dry fragrance. Imagine somewhere between geranium and rose.

Properties beneficial to the mind, emotions and spirit: Palmarosa is calming yet uplifting to the emotions and is said to clarify and refresh the mind. It is believed to aid the release of anger and grief, and may be of help in cases of anorexia, as it not only stimulates the appetite but has a positive influence on one's feelings and emotions.

Of interest: Native to India where highly skilled craftsmen have been distilling it for generations, palmarosa is also known as 'Indian geranium oil' and 'Rosha'. Many dealers sell palmarosa as Rose geranium, so be sure to check the Latin name. Oil from the Seychelles has a softer aroma, while that produced in Java has a more fruity note.

The palmarosa grass is harvested before the flowers appear, and the highest percentage of oil is obtained when the grass has completely dried out, about a week after cutting. There are two varieties of grass; Sofia and Motia, growing in different environments at different altitudes, the latter yielding a better quality of oil with a finer scent. The Sofia is often called 'ginger grass' and is sometimes mixed with the Motia, although the native dealers are able to determine if the oil is good quality by hitting the bottle against their palm, and observing if the air bubbles disperse quickly.

Palmarosa belongs to the same family as other oil producing plants, such as lemongrass, citronella and vetiver - all of which contain a number of elements found in rarer, more expensive plants, giving them their characteristic odour. They are therefore used to adulterate or stretch the more expensive oils. Other plants in this family are wheat, rice, corn, barley, oats etc all of which show amazing adaptability and diversity.

Palmarosa is widely used in perfumery, particularly to falsify rose oil, added to soaps and cosmetics, and also tobacco.

Properties beneficial to the physical body: An effective tonic, palmarosa stimulates the appetite and digestive system, especially the beneficial intestinal flora. Its antiviral action is valuable when over-heated, possibly even with fevers, as it reduces the temperature of the body. It may help if you have stiff or painful joints.

Palmarosa really comes into its own in the area of skin-care. It restores the water balance in the tissues, stimulates the secretion of sebum, stimulates call regeneration and re-establishes the physiological balance of the skin. It also has a calming, refreshing and antiseptic action. All these qualities make it suitable for numerous skin conditions and infections, from acne to wrinkles.

Scentsual blending suggestions: Palmarosa blends beautifully with many other essential oils. You may like to experiment with bergamot, geranium, jasmine, patchouli, fennel, lavender, lime, melissa, orange, petitgrain, rose, violet, ylang ylang, rosewood, sandalwood and lemon.

Alternative suggestions for use: Add a few drops to pure water in a spray bottle, to cool yourself on hot summer days.

Essential safety precautions: Palmarosa is considered a safe oil with no known precautions.
