Athame Definition and Athame Products
Athame - Wiccan, ritual, tool
An athame is a type of knife and magical tool that is used for ritualistic purposes by Wiccans. It typically has a black handle, as black absorbs power, and a double-edged blade, but is never used for actual cutting purposes. Instead, the athame is used to cast the circle at the start of rituals, which helps to form the magical space where rituals are performed. It’s also often used to summon and banish spirits, when they’re called to be present as guardians during the ceremony. If a chalice of wine is poured at the end of the ceremony, sometimes the athame may symbolically be put into the chalice too.
Traditionally, athames had steel blades and wooden handles, but many materials are used in modern versions. Sometimes related Wiccan symbols, rune signs or sigils are carved into athames. The athame is a very personal tool and, as one person uses it through many rituals, an element of power and magic builds within the athame.
The athame is regarded as being connected to the element air and to the direction east and the blade may be seen to represent learning and intellect.
